Going on a date isn’t just for new couples! It’s also an important part of established (set up/longstanding) relationships. Going on a date is slightly (a little) different when you’ve been in a relationship for a long time, but they’re such a good way to reconnect (come together again) with your partner and take time for just the two of you.
Here you can find some date night vocabulary you may need. Can you think of anything else to add to the list?
To communicate
Communication is one of the most important things in a relationship. Communication is about talking about your feelings and what you need from the relationship. No one is a mind reader, so it’s important to be clear about what you need and want from the relationship. Date night is the perfect time to do this. Maybe over dinner or drinks? Take a couple hours out of your week to talk to your partner about things, and see how the relationship improves (gets better)!
For example:
- I want to communicate to my girlfriend how much she means to me. I’m going to take her for dinner and a movie and tell her how much I appreciate (value) everything she does.
- Something hasn’t been right in our relationship. I need to communicate and talk about it with my boyfriend so we can fix it.
To make a reservation
Is there a favorite restaurant that you and your significant other go to? For your next date night, make sure to make a reservation! Making a reservation is calling or emailing a restaurant to book a table for a certain time. That way when you get to the restaurant, you know they have space for you.
For example:
- I made a reservation at that Indian restaurant we like for 7pm on Friday. How does that sound?
- She tried to make a reservation at their favorite restaurant, but there were no free tables. She had to make a reservation at another restaurant instead.
To make time for each other
Date night is a great way to make time for each other. This means to take time out of your schedule (weekly plan) and be together. You then do something that you like to do together. Life is so busy that it’s important to make time for your partner. Put other tasks aside (do them later), and spend time with each other to reconnect.
For example:
- We haven’t had a date night in a long time. We need to make time for each other. That’s why I’ve made plans for Saturday night for us.
- I’m so glad we made time for each other this week. We really needed the time to just be with each other.
To get dressed up
It can be really fun to make date night a special occasion. Why not get dressed up? Getting dressed up is to put on fancier clothes than normal. This could be a nice dress or a suit and tie. Something that’s a little fancier than what you usually wear. Getting dressed up can make date night something special and help it stand out more from the day-to-day (regular routine).
For example:
- Why don’t we get dressed up and go to the theater next week? That would be a nice change of pace (something different).
- The restaurant I booked for our date this week is really nice. Let’s get dressed up and make it a special occasion (event, moment)!
